It's time to play Name That Quilt!

Dear Friends,

Bella Fabrics is branching out into the design business! With this much talent under one roof, it was just a matter of time.

Susan Gatewood is the designer of our first "Bella Designs" quilt. We will offer this quilt as a block of the month, and then we will sell the pattern as a standalone design. This design has it all; traditional piecing, appliqué, English paper piecing and conventional paper piecing.

The fabric used is Woman of Courage by Windham Fabrics. This line is a rich, traditional, reproduction line that will compliment the different methods of piecing used in the pattern.

Help us find the perfect name for our first "Bella Designs"

quilt and win a pack of 23 Fat Quarters.

(one of every fabric used in the quilt)

Call the shop now to reserve your place in the block of the month that will start January 2013!

E-mail us at  bellafabrics@charter.net with your name, address, telephone number and quilt name suggestion.  We will pick the winning name on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at our Bella Fabrics Customer Holiday Party!

Get those creative juices flowing and have fun!

Sincerely,

Dear Friends,
As many of you know, school is back in session.  Fall and Christmas are fast approaching.  Embroidery machines are back in full swing, getting ready for the new seasons.  I hope each of you will enjoy the new embroidery items.  Be sure to sign up for the Bella Fabrics Expo coming October 13th and 14th.  I will be offering two half day classes.  I hope it will spark your interest.

October 1-4, 2012 I will be at the Viking Convention in Tucson, AZ so I can learn about all kinds of new products, including training on the new 5D for Macs.  So, if there is anything you want me to ask our friends at Viking, please be sure to let me know.  A number of items are already on the list after the software classes last week.

Christmas Embroidery Table Runner

Round Christmas BalBells for Table Runner Center

              Pointed Christmas Ornament

This month's Embroidery Club project will be another table runner.  For those of you who have not finished your other table runner, this Christmas table runner would be perfect to make the runner reversible.  The designs are colorworks, just like last month.  This month we are trying another new company, Hatched in Africa.  Although the designs stitched out wonderfully and look great, I could not get a good picture.  So, I also attached individual pictures of the blocks I chose for your enjoyment.  The designs we are going to use require a small number of colors and stitch out very nicely.  The pattern set I chose was #2114- Colorwork Christmas 1.  This design set was $15.00.  I used metallic gold thread for the bell and ornaments which look great.  That may be why it doesn't photograph.  A second set of patterns which would also look great is their #2030- Colorwork Christmas Sketches.  However, the price for that set is $25.00 and only the 5" x 7" size will work.  Use the links on the left to purchase your design package before coming to class, if at all possible.  Also, please load your designs on your memory stick so the class can move more efficiently.  As always, I will be able to assist you at the class with any problems you may have obtaining the designs.

The kits containing the fabrics used in the table runner have already been prepared at a cost around $15.00 to $20.00.  I realize some of you have never quilted so these simple blocks should allow you to put part of the table runner together in class.  For class, each student will need to bring:

1. Embroidery Machine with arm
2. Thread to match your design.  I used:
2 greens and 2 golds
1-2 reds and 1 brown for the pine cone
3. Ideal Embroidery Hoop Size:
150 x 150 mm or 200 x 200 mm
4. Cut-a-way Stabilizer
5. Scissors
6. Rulers to square up embroidery and cut fabric
7. Rotary Cutter
8. Regular sewing thread and bobbin
9. Foot pedal

4D & 5D Embroidery

Software Classes

Evening Session on Mondays:  Sept. 24th, Oct. 8th, and Oct. 22nd from 6pm - 8 pm

Daytime Session on Tuesdays:  Sept. 18th, Sept. 25th and Oct. 8th from 10:30 am -12:30 pm

A class was given last week to introduce everyone to the capabilities of Configure and Organizer in the 4D and 5D Embroidery software.  Everyone had a good time learning about the powerful software.  The next 2-3 classes will be spent using 4D or 5D Embroidery or 4D or 5D Embroidery Extra.  Anyone having 4D or 5D software is welcome to call the shop and register for the class.

For class, each student will need to bring:

1.  Laptop and external mouse, if desired
2.  Pad of Paper for Notes
3.  Pen
4.  Willingness to learn

I am looking forward to seeing every one at the upcoming Embroidery Classes.  By the way, I am hoping to have some more classes listed soon.  Don't forget to register for the Expo.  It looks like everyone attending is going to have a lot of fun.  If you have any questions or wish to register, please feel free to contact the shop at (757)238-7747.

Cindy French-

Grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, watching her mother and grandmother sew, knit, tat and crochet.  She took up quilting and weaving in high school and hasn't stopped since.  In years past, she taught math by day to support her habit, while working on all manner of quilts, weaving, and beading techniques during the evening and weekends.  Now full time, she gets to teach quilting, weaving, applique, bead work and other jewelry techniques for Bella Fabrics, Beadworkz in Portsmouth, and for local and national guilds and shows.  she co-wrote and self published
Copper Loom- A New Approach to an Ancient Craft
with her amazing  and artistic friend Kat Allison.  Once or twice a year, Cindy and Kat teach for Art & Soul-a mixed media retreat for artists.

Cindy has taught these classes for Bella Fabrics but now at expo you will have her for a full session and have the  opportunity to finish your bag project and get a thorough  understanding of your applique techniques and instruction on completing the full quilt.

You all have asked for longer class sessions  and we deliver!

Susan Gatewood-

Began sewing at a very early age, three!  Her grandmother taught her to sew on a Singer treadle machine.  She doesn't remember a time when there was not a needle in her hand.  She began seriously quilting 20 years ago and hasn't looked back since.  In her work life, she was a computer programmer, so computer sewing machines and quilting software are right up her alley.  There is nothing that she doesn't love about quilting, fabric, thread, borders, binding, piecing, appliqué, math; she is the master!

l

Jackie O'Brien -

Better known as the Quilt Ninja!  I married and between my husband and myself we have 4 sons and 7 grandchildren.  I am from a textile town in Upstate NY, but didn't see a sewing machine until home economics in high school.  I've been making clothes for 40 years.  I made my first quilt in 2004 and have made 175 quilts so far, it was love at first sight.  I have been teaching in local quilt shops for the past 6 years.  I am known for teaching One Block Wonders, of which I have made 48.  You can see my work at my Facebook page named "If These Threads Could Talk".  I love to combine quilting and machine embroidery.  My passion is teaching others to quilt and find their own way to express themselves.  I encourage people to label their quilt.

Jeanne Healey -

Started sewing garments for 4-H with her mother a Home Economics teacher when she was 11.  She continued sewing through high school, earning awards not only in 4-H but also in National Wool Competitions.  Jeanne graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Textile Science.  She started her career with Allied Colloids/Ciba Specialty Chemicals as a Textile and Coating Application Chemist.  Subsequently she worked in Regulatory Compliance and a Computer Programmer.  About 8 years ago, Jeanne discovered her mother's embroidery machine and has been hooked ever since.  She now teaches machine embroidery and programming classes at Bella Fabrics

If you want to walk away with a beautiful project Jeanne's class will fit the bill. You will have the expertise and knowledge to make the full quilt from you pattern, and what an amazing quilt it is!

Glory Brown-

A wannabe Home Economics teacher, became a women's libber and joined the Air Force as a medic. She and her family were Air Force for 30 years. She started playing around with quilting in 1992. She has created many samples for Bella Fabrics which are not only creative, but beautiful. Glory's talents are far reaching into every area of quilting.  Her hand work is among some of the best I have seen.  Learn the skills that traditional hand embroidery will round out your sewing and quilting education with one of Glory's classes.  You will be so glad you did!

Joan Bryan-

Has been sewing since her childhood.  She crossed over to the quilting world in 1995, taking her first beginning quilting class, and has been hooked ever since.  Using her sewing, tailoring and quilting stills has earned her several wearable arts and quilt awards, on the local, regional and national level.  She is always looking for new and innovative ways to use fabric.  In Joan's class you will learn to use just one fabric (a border print) and create an amazing quilt.  It will truly be your own "Wonderful One"

Bunnie Cleland-

Began crafting and sewing by designing clothes for Raggedy Ann and Barbie.  Originality, creativity and organization have always come easy for her. Cooking, however, has not. "I can burn water and I have the warped pan to prove it."

She has been quilting ever since her mother dragged her to a quilt show 6 years ago. She got hooked and hasn't looked back.  She jumped into quilting with a passion and was hired at a local quilt shop even before finishing her first quilting class.  She loves the scrappy look, but as a new quilter, had few scraps, so the fat quarter collecting began. Bunnie enjoys discovering new techniques and adapting patterns to suit her originality. She has the ability to translate written directions to a variety of understandable instructions for her students. Bunnie has won awards at regional level and has been accepted into competitive shows at a national level.

She has been machine quilting since the beginning of her quilting career, practicing on those first quilts. They're still well-used and well-loved.

Robin Phippins-

Has enjoyed sewing and doing crafts since childhood, but 15 years ago she found her true love in quilting. She loves everything about quilts, loves all fabric, English paper piecing, appliqué, and really loves a challenge.

Several years ago, Robin was asked to make a memory quilt and the need for funds to help offset college expenses started the journey. Since then she has made over 20 T-shirt quilts from customers clothes and t-shirts. Robin has repeat customers knowing that they will get a beautiful, one of a kind memory wrapped in a quilt!

A year ago Robin started long-arm machine quilting for customers, she gets great pleasure from meeting customers and helping them finish their masterpiece.  Robin enjoys people and loves sharing her knowledge.

Has been sewing since she was a child and quilting for over 15 years. Many years ago she started to teach quilt making to others and then turned her skills to pattern designing. Pat found that she really enjoys designing and seeing how other quilters made her patterns.

In 2000 Pat's designs became so popular that she formed a design and publishing company called Pat Sloan & Co.

In addition to designing and publishing her work, Pat now travels around the country teaching and showing her quilts to quilt guilds and quilt shows and shops. Also, Pat has had her designs published in many national magazines, has written many books on quilting and has designed several lines of fabric for P&B Textiles and Moda Fabrics.

Marcie Patch-

Like most quilters, I am addicted to fabric. I think it must have first occurred the moment I was born and was wrapped in a nice soft cotton blanket.

My passion is scrap quilts. I have a large fabric collection focused on reproduction prints. When I make a quilt I draw from what I have on hand. I model my designs after traditional quilts and try to add my own twist to make it unique. I sell my patterns under the name Patchalot Patterns, putting my last name in play.

I am happy to say that I have had my quilt designs published in several wonderful magazines, including McCall's Quilting and McCall's Quick Quilts; American Patchwork & Quilting, Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting and Primitive Quilts and Projects.
